Participants in the 2018 Dave Bleile Track and Field Meet, Legion Field, Grande Prairie.

Approximately 400 junior high student-athletes from across Peace Wapiti Public School Division (PWPSD) are ready to compete in the annual track meet event honouring Dave Bleile, a former teacher who spent the bulk of his career at Helen E. Taylor School in Wembley. The event will begin at 10:00 a.m. at Legion Field in Grande Prairie on Tuesday, May 21, wrapping up with an awards presentation at 1:30 p.m. Rain date for the event is Monday, May 27.

Students will compete in junior, intermediate and senior age groups. Results are compiled to identify winners in both small and large school categories, creating the potential for up to six schools to win plaques at the event.

Participating large schools are Harry Balfour School, Hythe Regional School, Peace Wapiti Academy, Sexsmith Secondary School and Whispering Ridge Community School. Small schools competing in the event are Bezanson School, Clairmont Community School, Elmworth School, Helen E. Taylor School, LaGlace School, Penson School, Rycroft School, Savanna School, Spirit River Regional Academy and Woking School.

Assistant Principal Darren Robertson of Hythe Regional School has been in charge of the Dave Bleile Track Meet since 2011.

“Our student-athletes really enjoy this annual event. They get to compete against each other and cheer on their friends and teammates,” says Mr. Robertson.

The meet will include track races, hurdles, long and triple jumps, high jump, field throwing events, shot put, discus, and javelin.

“There’s a lot of school pride shown as schools compete against one another for plaques which are awarded to the top schools overall in each category,” adds Mr. Robertson.
