The South Peace Regional Archives is launching a new reconciliation project called “Renaming the Past, Reclaiming Their Stories: Indigenous Records”.

The project will involve examining records identified by the Indigenous History Committee as containing Indigenous content and adding culturally appropriate descriptions and contextual information.

The Archives say the project will increase access to about 300 Indigenous-related archival photographs and paper artifacts through digitization and promotion on social media. Through consultation with the Indigenous History Committee, the project will enable Indigenous peoples to engage in the identification of these.

This new project is made possible by the Documentary Heritage Communities Program. Library and Archives Canada (LAC) provides $1.5 million each year to documentary heritage organizations across the country. This funding helps to ensure that Canada’s continuing memory is documented, preserved and accessible.
