On Dec. 23, 2021, at approximately 9 a.m., Mayerthorpe RCMP responded to a serious motor vehicle collision on Highway 43 at Nakota Crossing just east of the Hamlet of Glenevis, Alta. 

The preliminary investigation indicates that a car travelling in the left lane lost control and struck a semi-tractor driving in the right lane. Both vehicles were northwest bound on Highway 43.

After the initial collision, the car pulled off to the left shoulder and the semi-tractor pulled off to the right shoulder.

The driver of the car then exited his vehicle and crossed the highway to speak with the driver of the semi-tractor.  When the driver of the car was crossing back across the highway, he was struck by another northwest bound semi-tractor.

The 21-year-old male from Grande Prairie, Alta., was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The 21-year-female passenger of the car from Grande Prairie, the 39-year-old male driver and lone occupant of the first involved semi-tractor from Calgary, as well as the lone driver, a 32-year-old male from Edmonton of the second involved semi-tractor, were not physically injured.

The RCMP Collision Analyst attended the scene to assist with the investigation. The northwest traffic of Highway 43 was diverted until approximately 2:40 p.m. Lac Ste. Anne County Fire Services also responded and assisted with traffic control.

Road conditions were reported to be snow and ice covered in that area of Highway 43 at the time of the collision.

The next-of-kin has been notified and the name of the deceased will not be released. 

The collision remains under investigation however no further updates are anticipated.
