On Friday, January 29, Dawson Creek Firefighter Mike Fritsche was awarded an Exemplary Service Medal from Mayor Dale Bumstead .

The Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal was created on August 29, 1985 by the federal government and honours members of a recognized Canadian fire service who have completed 20 years of service, ten years of which have been served in the performance of duties involving potential risks, and were employed on or after the date of creation of the Medal.

All professional fire departments in the country offer service medals for firefighters that reach certain timelines in their careers. In BC, the provincial service medal is for 25 and 35 years of service where the federal is for 20, 30 and 40 years of service.
