The Chief Firearms Officer has made the decision to permanently close the Wapiti Shooters Club outdoor rifle and handgun range.

This was after a full investigation in consultation with Wapiti Dunes Shooting Club executive.

According to the County of Grande Prairie, residents had expressed concerns to Council for “their safety and the safety of those recreating nearby due to numerous errant bullets, potentially leaving the Wapiti range facility, that have resulted in both property damage and injury to an individual.”

These kinds of incidents have been reported as far back as 2003. Because of the concerns expressed and results of municipal safety review by County Regional Enforcement Services, Council sent a request last year to Alberta Justice and Solicitor General and the Chief Firearms Officer to conduct the investigation.

Outdoor rifle activities at the range be were also requested to be temporarily revoked until the investigation was complete.

As the County says, “The safety of our communities is a priority for the County. The County recognizes the outstanding cooperation of the many parties involved in this extensive investigation to work toward a resolution of this situation.”
