Highway 16 has been re-opened to restricted traffic and significant delays are expected due to large backlogs of traffic. Hinton RCMP and emergency crews will be on scene for several hours still.

According to an RCMP, the investigation so far indicates a pick-up truck was travelling westbound on Highway 16 and it crossed the centre line into the eastbound lane before colliding with an SUV travelling eastbound.

The pick-up truck’s lone occupant, a 36-year-old male from B.C., has minor injuries. A 10-year-old girl in the SUV was pronounced dead on scene. The other six occupants, aged 13, 14, 16, 19, 44 and 56-years-old were taken for emergency medical treatment and suffered injuries that are not believed to be life threatening. The occupants of the SUV were from Edmonton.

Police will not release the name of the deceased girl.
