Former Toronto pastor Philip Grandine is sentenced to 15 years for the murder of his wife.

His wife, Anna Grandine, drowned in their bathtub in the fall of 2011 after being sedated by her husband Phillip.

The pastor procured a common drug called Lorazopram from his place of work to sedate his wife. He had been working as a registered nurse at a care home after being let go by his Baptist congregation. The church relieved Phillip after they discovered he was having an affair with a parishioner and was struggling with pornography.

His wife had been admitted days earlier to the hospital after becoming unwell the hours after a counseling session with another pastor from the congregation. Anna was feeling physically and mentally unwell but was released when her symptoms subsided.

Maria Darvin, Anna's mother, says in court that she heard her daughter ask Phillip at the hospital if he "put something in (her) drink.”

Anna had been feeling unwell previously but doctors concluded it could be consistent with her pregnancy. After her death, examiners found evidence of the nervous-system suppressant in her system, which helped lead to the sentencing of Phillip.

This is the third time the defendant has gone to court over this case. Phillip appealed to the court last year to appeal his manslaughter conviction. His case has been seen by two separate jurors. Yesterday's hearing gave the court's second decision on the matter where they again ruled that he was to be convicted for manslaughter. The defendant has 12 years remaining in his sentence.

Phillip is currently appealing for bail and is waiting for a decision by the court.
