Currently, a large amount of water from the snow melt is causing flooding of low lying areas in and around the Town of Sexsmith.

Alberta Emergency Alert is letting residents know there may be Public Works or one of the other agencies assisting the Town entering yards to assess and mitigate any flooding. They are instructing people to ensure they follow the directions of local authorities, avoid rivers, valleys and low lying areas and take all necessary precautions.

There is a partial road closure on 100 Avenue where pumps are set up to deal with the flooding. They were set up as a precaution a few days ago.

Road closures include:

  • Entry from Highway 2 on 100 Avenue has reduced access due to spring melt. This entrance will provide access to Forest Grove and Shannon subdivision only.
  • 95 Avenue access from Highway 2 will provide access to all other portions of the community.
  • 106 Street will be closed from 103 Avenue north to the north side of the slough due to spring runoff. Please use alternate routes.

The Town says they "[Did] undertake a stormwater management master plan funded by the Provincial government and has also obtained funds from the Province to implement the projects in this plan. Currently additional funds are awaiting approval at the federal level. If this funding is approved this will allow the town to make some major upgrades to control spring melt water flows into the community on a permanent basis. It is anticipated that news on this funding will be made available before the end of 2020."

Residents dealing with high water and require sandbags are asked to call 780-568-3681 or go to Public Works to pick up your sandbags.
