Red Deer RCMP stopped two vehicles and charged the drivers after they were caught allegedly racing each other along 19th street.

Shortly after 10:00 pm on Saturday, September 19th, RCMP Traffic Services were using a stationary radar gun along 19th street when they saw two vehicles that appeared to be racing near the Westerner Park entrance.

One vehicle was clocked at 120 km/h in a 70 km/h zone, while the other was doing 151 km/h.

Both drivers were stopped and charged. The driver of the vehicle travelling 50 km/h over the speed limit was issued a violation ticket and fined $495, as well as charged for engaging in a race.

The 19-year-old driver of the vehicle doing 81 km/h above the speed limit received a court summons where a judge can impose additional penalties such as a fine or license suspension.

It is mandatory for drivers who exceed 50 km/h over the posted speed limit.

“Citizens travelling at such extreme speeds pose a serious and concerning risk to the public,” says Sergeant Michael Zufferli with the Red Deer RCMP Traffic Unit. “Our focus is to deter these behaviours through enforcement and education.”
