A new committee has been established by the County of Grande Prairie to review Council and Board member remuneration. Recruitment is underway for three public representatives.

The committee will review existing Council and Board/Committee remuneration and expense reimbursement policies and make recommendations to Council before October’s municipal election.

Interested residents can apply to serve on the committee by January 18, 2021, at 4:30 p.m. to www.countygp.ab.ca/boards. Two Council members will also serve on the committee.

“Having public members on this committee is vital to ongoing transparency and accountability,” says CAO Joulia Whittleton.

“Council and public representatives on committees provide important service to residents, and policies have been developed to ensure fair compensation. Reviewing them at regular intervals ensures they continue to reflect their purpose.”

Policies and bylaws to be reviewed by the committee include: Policy F1 – Council Honoraria and Travel Expense Policy, Policy F5, Board Member Compensation Policy, and Bylaw 2523 and Amending Bylaws.

Area to be addressed by the committee include levels of compensation for the Reeve, Councillors, and Board/Committee members, recognition and evaluation of the time commitment for elected officials and public representatives, expense reimbursement, the submission and approval of claims processes and the public reporting process.

Meetings will be held, as required, over the next eight months and may occur during regular business hours.

Appointees will be compensated according to the County’s current compensation policy.
