A new wildfire was discovered in the High Level Forest Area yesterday July 27.

The fire is around 81 km northeast of the community of Meander on the east side of highway 35, is 15.24 hectares in size, and classified as being held.

The only other active fire is the Chuckegg Creek wildfire, which is still under control.

Firefighters have been working on a 111-hectare hotspot on the east side of the fire these last few weeks, which has now been successfully extinguished.

Alberta Wildfire reports there is still work to be done on the Chuckegg Creek fire before it can be classified as extinguished. The anticipated area of work is a large area in the east of the fire as it continues to burn deep into the peat moss. The fire is being monitered from that side at the Sandy Pines day base as well as aerial patorls and low level altitude infrared scanning.

The wildfire danger in the High Level Forest Area has been raised to moderate, and while there is no fire advisory in place, caution still needs to be taken. In particular, Alberta Wildfire wants off-highway vehicle drivers to check their hotspots regularly to prevent unintended wildfire starts.

Since Mar. 1, the High Level Forest Area has recorded 38 wildfires in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta that have burned a total of 122.17 hectares.
