RCMP have been dealing with an issue at a popular summer spot.

On Friday (July 24) and Saturday, Mounties were called after a couple of tubers missed exiting the Pembina River at the provincial park. Officers had to go out and find the stranded tubers.

Two more river-users were reported missing Sunday evening, and police are currently trying to locate them.

Police say by using officers to search for people who miss the exit, it ties up resources that could be needed for a high priority call elsewhere. This was an issue last year as well.

"The biggest misconception I think that people have is the river circles back around and you can end up where you started. The reality is that it doesn't," said Sergeant Brian Topham with the Evansburg RCMP. "There is a place where you have to get out and that is the Pembina River Provincial Park."

If anyone floats past the park, there is not another exit until the town of Sangudo, which is about an 8-hour float.

Visitors to the park are reminded:

  • Wear a life jacket
  • Know the area, review maps and plan for the length of your journey]
  • Notify a responsible person where you are going, who you are with, and the route you plan on taking
  • Dress appropriately for the weather, including the use of a wet suit when necessary. Remember sunscreen, water supplies and bug spray
  • Do not consume alcohol prior to, or during tubing
  • Bring a charged cell phone and store it properly
