The City of Grande Prairie has more capital projects underway including the sidewalk repair and replacement program, road overlays, and trail reconstruction.

Willow Drive Road Overlay in Cobblestone

On Monday, May 31, the City’s Road Rehabilitation program begins in the Cobblestone neighbourhood. Road overlay will take place on Willow Drive between 95 Avenue and 86A Avenue, and on 89 Avenue from Willow Drive to east of 88 Street.

Construction includes milling the roadways and placing a new pavement surface, spot concrete work, and some storm sewer infrastructure repairs.

Vehicle traffic will be maintained with at least one lane open and sidewalk access will be maintained, with minor disruptions to pedestrians.

Sidewalk Improvements in VLA/Montrose and Hillside

The City’s 2021 Sidewalk Program is underway in the VLA Montrose neighbourhood this week, before moving to the Hillside neighbourhood on Monday. Both sites are expected to be complete by mid-June.

VLA Montrose - 106 Avenue between 100 Street and 98 Street will receive a full sidewalk rehabilitation, which includes removing the existing infrastructure and replacing it with new sidewalks. Some drainage repairs will also take place.

Hillside - 105 Avenue between 96 Street and 95 Street will also see a full sidewalk rehabilitation. The existing sidewalk on the north side of the road will be removed and replaced with a new, wider sidewalk. The sidewalk on the south side of the road will be removed and replaced with a standard curb and gutter.

The City’s Sidewalk Program is an annual program that aims to replace existing sidewalks and bring them as close to current standards as possible to ensure accessibility for all sidewalk users. The City’s current standard for roads typically found in residential areas is a 1.5 metre sidewalk on one side of the road and a 10.5 metre road width.

Trail Construction Along Crystal Lake Drive and 68 Avenue

The City’s Trail Rehabilitation Program continues at three locations on Monday. Crews will be:

  • Removing the asphalt trail along Crystal Lake Drive between 91B Street and Cygnet Boulevard and replacing it with a concrete sidewalk
  • Installing an asphalt overlay on the existing trail north of 68 Avenue between 100 Street and Poplar Drive
  • Installing a new trail in the lot north of 68 Avenue, east of the Mission Estates Plaza

The specified trails will be closed to the public until all work is completed, with all construction zones signed and barricaded. Construction at all three sites is expected to be complete by mid-June.

The City’s Trail Program presents an opportunity to make functional improvements to the city’s existing trail system by repairing critical sites and installing new path connections to ensure that trails are safe for all users.

Drivers are reminded to drive with caution near construction zones, watch for equipment and workers who may be present, obey all posted signage, and follow the direction of flag persons if present. The City appreciates everyone’s patience and understanding during this construction season.
