Evidence of asymptomatic people spreading COVID-19 is growing.

Health officials are advising residents to wear non-medical masks in instances where physical distancing is difficult to maintain. Proper masks and respirators must be kept for health-care workers and others providing direct care to COVID-19 patients.

"Wearing a non-medical mask, such as a homemade cloth mask, has not been proven to protect the person who is wearing it. However, it may be helpful in protecting others around you," said Alberta's chief medical officer of health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw.

The mask will keep droplets away from other people, which is how the virus is most easily spread. It also may prevent people from touching their noses and mouths.

She added physical distancing and washing your hands frequently are still the best protection.

When wearing a mask:

  • Wash your hands immediately before putting it on and immediately after taking it off (in addition to practicing good hand hygiene while wearing it)
  • Ensure it fits well (non-gaping)
  • Do not share it with others
  • Avoid touching the mask while wearing it
  • Change masks as soon it gets damp or soiled
  • Only wear masks for a short time
  • Assume the mask has been contaminated after being worn and wash it before re-use.
