On Jan. 9 at 12:24 p.m., Beaverlodge RCMP responded to the report of a suspicious male who appeared to be camping on Crown land.  

Members located the male along with a vehicle and trailer at a campsite located near Range Road 90 and Township Road 755 in Grande Prairie County. 

Police determine the vehicle at the campsite had been reported stolen on Dec. 2, from La Glace, and the trailer was reported stolen on Dec. 14, from Beaverlodge. The male was arrested for possession of stolen property along with outstanding warrants out of Edmonton and Beaverlodge. 

During a search of the vehicle police located and seized a loaded sawed-off shotgun, two additional loaded firearms, 3.9 grams of suspected methamphetamine, multiple sets of keys, cheques, gas cards and ammunition. The male is currently on conditions to not possess firearms or ammunition. 

Thomas Christopher Burt, 32, of Grande Prairie, has been charged with 18 offences, some of which include: 

  • Possession of a restricted firearm 
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm 
  • Three counts of careless use of a firearm 
  • Two counts of possession of property obtained by crime over $5000 
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5000 
  • Two counts of fail to comply with conditions 

Burt was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in Grande Prairie Provincial Court on Jan. 13.
