The Grande Prairie Composite High School is pleased to announce that Malana Loxam, a Grade 12 student at the Grande Prairie Composite High School in the International Baccalaureate Program, has been awarded the prestigious $80,000 Schulich Leader Scholarship to study Bachelor of Science at the University of Calgary beginning in September of 2021.

Loxam was nominated by the Grande Prairie Composite High School for her outstanding academic achievements and community involvement. Loxam is the third student to win a Schulich Leader Scholarship at the Grande Prairie Composite High School in the past four years, after Shubh Patel in 2020 Heide Adham in 2017.

“We are proud to celebrate ten years of Schulich Leader Scholarships, the premier STEM scholarship program in Canada and the world. This group of 100 outstanding students will represent the best, and brightest Canada has to offer and will make great contributions to society, both on a national and global scale. With their university expenses covered, they can focus their time on their studies, research projects, extracurriculars, and entrepreneurial ventures. They are the next generation of entrepreneurial-minded, technology innovators,” says program founder Seymour Schulich.

In response to the challenges we are facing this year in Canada, the Schulich Leadership Scholarship Canada is once again awarding an additional 50 scholarships for a total of 100.

Loxam says, “My family and I found out together, and we were filled with gratitude, relief and excitement. The scholarship will allow me to pursue my academics with less worry about the financial restraints of post-secondary studies. I am excited to join the Schulich network of young leaders, which will benefit me greatly. Also, taking time and exploring academic interests will help broaden my abilities and make me a more well-rounded student.”

Mr. Dennis Vobeyda, principal of the Grande Prairie Composite High School, shared, “All of us at GPCHS are proud of Malana’s personal contributions in the school, in the community, and with respect to her academic achievements.  We are fortunate to have excellent students, in general, but Malana distinguishes herself through her quiet leadership, community focus, and pursuit of academic excellence.”
