The City of Grande Prairie’s Selected Traffic Enforcement Program will be focusing on pedestrian safety this month.

City bylaw are urging motorists to reduce their speed when approaching busy intersections as pedestrians may be distracted and may not fully signal their intent to cross the road.

Bylaw are also asking pedestrians to follow a simple set of rules when it comes to walking around the city. Some tips include always using the sidewalk, and if you can’t, walk on the side of the road facing traffic.

Residents are also urged to wear bright coloured clothing and always stop at a curb to show drivers you intend to cross the road.

It is also suggested that ongoing changes in daylight during the months of October and November, along with potentially hazardous weather conditions, can make seeing pedestrians challenging.

Failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, is a $776 fine and it will also cost drivers four demerit points.
