Grande Prairie Regional Sport Connection is introducing the new Family Sample Sport Days to help families stay active.

GP Regional Sport Connection says that before COVID-19, 74% of children spent more than 1-hour playing sports, but since the pandemic, it has decreased to 17%. They are very concerned about this trend as it has negative effects on anxiety, eating and sleeping habits.

On the other hand, they’ve also found that 78% of families have become more active together, and they want to help.

Karna Germsheid, Executive Director of GP Regional Sport Connection, explains.

“We are aware that people are doing more with their families and recognizing that there's a gap and people don't always know what to do or come up with ideas we want to help support that engagement.”

The organization is partnering with local sport organizations to help run families through new sports.

“So they sign up as a family. They show up as a family. They'll have a volunteer from the sport organization there to show them the ropes, show them how to do it. There will be equipment there, but they can certainly bring their own equipment. Of course we're following all provincial guidelines. They can try it and be introduced to new sport and hopefully it'll catch fire within the family. These are sports that are either free or very low cost, so low barrier sports for families to engage with around the region.”

There are four sports they’re offering in the next few weeks: log bowling, disc golf, pickleball and a guided hike. Once winter begins, they’ll be adding more sports, including potentially snowshoeing and cross-country opportunities.

Families can register at gpsportconnect.ca on the events page.
