The RCMP and the Grande Prairie Integrated Traffic Services Unit continue to work hard to enhance public safety by reducing hazardous behaviours on Alberta roadways through strategic partnerships, enforcement, education and crime reduction initiatives.

Recently, the Traffic Unit stopped drivers at excessive speeds including a motorist on Highway 43 near Bezanson at 180 km/hr in a 110 km/hr zone and on Highway 49 near Bay Tree at 190 km/hr in a 100 km/hr zone.

In the month of May, the Grande Prairie Integrated Traffic Services Unit issued seven mandatory court summons to drivers for speeding in excess of 51 km/h over the maximum posted speed limit.

RCMP would like to remind motorists that excessive speed endangers all users of the roadways. Vehicles travelling at more then 51 km/h above the maximum posted speed limit will be stopped and the driver will be issued a summons to court.  The maximum fine upon conviction could be up to $2,000, six months in custody, or both. A conviction at more than 51 km/hr also results in six demerit points and the court has the option to suspend the offender’s driver licence.

With Alberta re-opening, everyone will be eager to get out and enjoy the summer, resulting in an increased volume of vehicles on the highways. Grande Prairie Integrated Traffic Services would like to remind all motorists to be safe and responsible by continuing to follow all public health guidelines and the rules of the road.
