The City of Grande Prairie will begin Phase 4 of the Downtown Rehabilitation and Streetscapes Project on May 3.

Phase 4 of the multi-year project consists of a budgeted $14 million investment in the city centre to replace and enhance underground infrastructure and streetscape features along 100 Avenue between west of 100 Street and 98 Street, amplifying Grande Prairie’s vibrancy and creating a high-density development ready city centre for years to come.

During the first stage of construction, crews plan to replace the deep underground utilities under the intersection of 100 Avenue and 100 Street. Upon completion of underground work in the intersection, a temporary surface will be laid, and the intersection will reopen to vehicle traffic. A permanent surface will be installed later in the summer when paving of the entire construction zone occurs.

Road Closure and Detour

On May 3, the first stage of road closures begins with the intersection of 100 Avenue and 100 Street closed to north, south, and westbound vehicle traffic for approximately one week, weather dependent. The closure will then expand east along 100 Avenue to 99 Street as work progresses.

A signed detour around the construction site is available to motorists and suggested travel routes are displayed on a detour map available for viewing on the City website.

The suggested detour routes encourage traffic through temporary traffic signals that have been coordinated with permanent signals in the city centre to aid in traffic flow around the construction zone. The temporary traffic signals are located at 102 Street and 102 Avenue, as well as 100 Street and 102 Avenue.

Public Transit Impact

Stop 200/400 located on 100 Avenue will be closed due to construction, riders can:

  • Board route 2 at the Towne Centre Mall or the Farmer's Market.
  • Board route 4 at the Towne Centre Mall or the Muskoseepi Park.

Visiting the City Centre During Construction

Businesses remain open and accessible to the community, and visitors may park in designated areas. The City has created a parking map to aid in locating free public parking and accessible parking stall throughout the downtown core, which is available for download on the City website.

Pedestrian access to the front of local businesses is expected to be in place for the duration of the construction project, with minor interruptions at select times.

While the 100 Avenue and 100 Street intersection is closed, a temporary vehicle cul-de-sac is in place along 100 Avenue between 101 Street and 100 Street to ease access to businesses. Parking is available on the west side of the crosswalk on either side of the road.
