The Grande Prairie Palliative Care Society started about 30 years ago. It’s a small grassroots not-for-profit that relies on community sponsors, event fundraisers, grants and individual donations to help support the palliative care community.

The organization plays several important roles in the community:

  • They assist their clients and families in financial need

  • Promote education of healthcare professionals and volunteers

  • Increase awareness of Hospice and palliative care within the community

One of the most well-known services provided by the Grande Prairie Palliative Care Society is the distribution of their comfort care bags.

Director Kristin Yaceyko says, “The contents of the bags are selected to offer comfort and activities for individuals and families that are walking through end-of-life care.”

Some other programs and supports offered by the society include:

  • Companioning Through Grief

  • Sheepskin Loaner

  • Training Opportunities

  • Virtual Care

  • Virtual Pen Pal

  • Volunteering

There are several ways you can offer support to the Grande Prairie Palliative Care Society.

Yaceyko says, “We offer wish list Wednesday which is on our social media page. We've listed a lot of small items that anybody's budget can fit. We've got $5 items on there up to 20-30 dollars, and we try to update that every week with a list of current needs”. Their other crucial need is volunteers. There are many volunteer opportunities for people of all ages and abilities. More information on volunteer opportunities can be found at https://gpcare.ca/programs/volunteer
