On April 22, Dawson Creek RCMP were notified that an unknown man, driving a vehicle, had approached an 11-year-old child in the area of 113th avenue and offered them a ride.

Dawson Creek RCMP tracked down the driver and spoke with him. The driver said it appeared to him the child was in trouble, running from another group of children, and that he offered a ride to the end of the block to help.

The family confirmed that the child had been running from another group of children in a game of hide-and-seek, though it may have appeared to others that the child was in distress.

In the end, RCMP say the child did the right thing by refusing the ride with a stranger and informing his family of the interaction. Police were appropriately involved, and the investigation determined that there was no criminal intent. The investigation has now been closed.

This incident provides an opportunity to remind parents to have that talk with your children. Take the opportunity to inform your children as to what actions they should take if approached by a stranger. If an incident did occur, be sure to report it to your local RCMP Detachment.
