The City of Grande Prairie is updating motorist and commuters of essential construction work on the 116 Avenue and 102 Street intersection, beginning early Thursday, July 4, 2024. This project is crucial for the installation of a new concrete storm vault necessary for accommodating storm water flows from the 116 Ave and 102 St storm mains.

Construction crews will start at the north side of the intersection, focusing on storm vault installation. Following this, work will shift to the south side to connect pipes and install an overflow pipe that will lead to a nearby ditch. The project is expected to last approximately two to three weeks, dependent on weather conditions.

Traffic Adjustments and Detours:

  • No left turns will be allowed from 116 Ave onto 102 St northbound.
  • Detours will be implemented for vehicles turning north from 116 Ave onto 102 St, and for those travelling south on 102 St north of 116 Ave.
  • The intersection will be closed to through traffic on 102 St, with detours for northbound traffic.
  • The service road north of 116 Ave on east and west of 102 St will experience disruptions.
  • Traffic flow through the site will be maintained in a single lane for eastbound and westbound, alternating, as necessary.
  • Traffic patterns will be subject to change when of south side work begins.

Transit and Pedestrian Impacts:

  • Route 8 of the public transit system will undergo some bus stop relocations. Please visit the City Transit page at cityofgp.com/transit, log into the On Demand app at gpmyride.app.ridewithvia.com, view the Where’s My Ride bus tracker, or call 311 when planning your trip.
  • Pedestrians will be allowed to cross the intersection with the possibly of being limited to one side at a time.
  • All are advised to obey the variable message signs displayed for safety and directional guidance.

"This infrastructure enhancement is vital for our city's continued growth and environmental stewardship,” says Grande Prairie’s Capital Construction Supervisor, Mark Hoseasson. “It will significantly improve our storm water management system, ensuring we can handle the demands of our community effectively."

The City appreciates the patience and cooperation of all residents and commuters during this period and is committed to minimizing disruptions while ensuring the safety of all parties.
