The City of Grande Prairie invites the community to join in celebrating traditional Canadian heritage and multiculturalism for Alberta’s 46th Heritage Day on Monday, August 3.

Celebrations featuring historical demonstrations, live art demonstrations, musical performances and food trucks take place from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Grande Prairie Museum and Muskoseepi Park.

Heritage Village in the Grande Prairie Museum is featuring live historical demonstrations known as Heritage Hunters, an unveiling of a new feature at the village, a traditional 1920s saxophone performance from Muses North Productions and hula hooping performances from Hula Hoop Circus.

The Heritage Hunters portion of the event is free to attend, but residents are asked to register in advance in an effort to monitor group size and physical distancing protocols. To register for a 50-minute timeslot, visit cityofgrandeprairie.perfectmind.com. Each time slot has capacity for 50 people.

Near the amphitheatre in Muskoseepi Park, local artists are painting themed artworks from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. for the public to view. The three themes chosen by the community to inspire the artists are, “Grande Prairie through the ages,” “Historical buildings in the region” and “the meaning of Muskoseepi.” Artists interested in being part of this event can email programming@cityofgp.com by Monday, July 27 with their theme selection and pictures of two original art pieces. Limited spots are available; all expressions of interest will be reviewed, and featured artists will be selected by a panel. All artwork will be displayed in the Ernie Radbourne Pavilion year-round.

Food trucks featuring special Heritage Day food dishes will be available for purchase, and acoustical performances by local band Mearon are also taking place during the event.

Leading up to the event, the City and Grande Prairie Regional Tourism Association have partnered together to host a Heritage Day themed scavenger hunt, through an interactive scavenger hunt app. The scavenger hunt starts July 27 and ends 11:59 p.m. on August 3. Full details on how to download the app, complete tasks and win prizes is available at cityofgp.com/heritageday
