A government-run church in China was destroyed after an attack that left two women injured and a man in police custody.

In China's Henen province, 200 communist officials stormed Sunzhuang church on June 12, China Aid and The Christian Post report.

There were no legal documents shown by the officials from the Zhengzhou High-Tech District's Ethnic and Religious Affairs Bureau when they began to dismantle the church using cranes and other machinery.

Furniture and other items were tossed from the church building before it was completely demolished.

China Aid, a non-governmental Christian nonprofit organization that works to promote religious freedom in China, says a Christian woman tried to resist the officials when they first entered the church. The woman was knocked unconscious after she was pushed to the ground. Another female church member was beaten, and both required hospitalization.

The communist government in China has allowed for Sunzhuang Chruch to exist and function since June 2012 when the Three-Self Patriotic Movement took place. The movement was led by a protestant organization in the People's Republic of China.

Following the construction of Sunzhuang Church, the church received eviction and demolition notices from authorities in Sunzhuan village in June 2013. The church did not consent to this demolition and authorities were then prevented from carrying out the demolition.

The church's problems, then, were still far from over. Vehicles owned by the province threw dirt and rocks at Sunzhuang Church's door. Electricity and water to the church were cut off.

Earlier this month, authorities reportedly removed crosses from more than 250 government-run churches between January and April. A provincial employee from M'anshan City says all Christian symbols were ordered removed as part of a crackdown campaign on churches by the government.

Some reports also indicate churches were required to remove any photos of Jesus and Mary and instead replace them with photos of President Xi Jinping.

These actions by the Chinese government have been noticed by the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), the U.S. State Department, and other rights groups. The 2020 annual report by USCIRF notes the removal of crosses from churches across China and a ban on children under the age of 18 from participating in a religious service.

China is ranked 23 out of the top 50 countries in the world where it is most dangerous to be a Christian on Open Doors' World Watch List.
