Just before 3:00 p.m. May 6, County of Grande Prairie Regional Fire Service and neighbouring fire departments responded to a reported wildland fire near Hermit Lake, west of the City of Grande Prairie.

Upon arrival, crews from the Clairmont and Dunes Stations, along with the City of Grande Prairie and Town of Wembley Fire departments, discovered an active wildland fire approaching a nearby farmer’s field. Crews brought the fire under control, with resulting damage limited to about four hectares of land.

No one was harmed by the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation and is believed to have sparked by a rock strike from farm equipment.

Regional Fire Service is reminding the public that an immediate call to 911 at the first sign of fire allows crews to respond quickly and minimize damage as much as possible.
