The City of Grande Prairie is getting ready for another year of Canada Day celebrations happening downtown on Monday, July 1.

The Canada Day parade begins at 2 p.m. and travels from Hillside to Northwestern Polytechnic Parking Lot A via 100 Avenue. Several roads and transit routes have impacts on Monday, July 1 to accommodate the Canada Day parade.

 

Free & extended transit service

Transit operates for free on Canada Day with regular service running on Sunday hours of 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. followed by extended Late Night On-Demand and accessible services between any stops within Grande Prairie running from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Book on-demand and accessible transit services until 12:30 a.m. (for service until 1 a.m.) on Saturday, July 1 online at gpmyride.app.ridewithvia.com, through the Grande Prairie My Ride app or by calling dispatch at 780-830-RIDE(7433).

 

Transportation impacts

Transportation delays are expected on July 1 because of the following road closures:

·100 Avenue (between 98 Street and 102 Street) from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m.

·100 Avenue (between 96 Street and 106 Street) from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

·108 Avenue (between 94 Street and 96 Street) from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

·96 Street (between 108 Avenue and 100 Avenue) from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Motorists are encouraged to use 92 Street or 108 Street to avoid delays northbound and southbound or 116 Avenue or 68 Avenue to avoid delays westbound or eastbound.

 

Transit impacts

Transit Routes 1 and 3 are re-routing on Monday, July 1 and the following bus stops will be closed during the specified times:

  • Route 3
    • Stop 302 from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.
    • Route unavailable from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Route 4
    • Stop 402 from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.
    • Route unavailable from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Route 6
    • Stops 632, 634, 636, 638, 640, 642, 644, 646, 648 and 650 from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.
    • Route unavailable from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Route 7
    • Route unavailable from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Route 8
    • Stop 802 from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.
    • Route unavailable from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Routes 2, 5 and 9 are unaffected by Canada Day impacts.

The City looks forward to hosting another year of grander celebrations at the free Canada Day festivities. Residents are invited to come out and enjoy the celebrations which include a parade, free swimming at the Aquatera Outdoor Pool, carnival rides and games, sponsored by Paramount Resources Ltd, and free transit.
