After announcing changes to the Provincial Fuel Tax, Premier Jason Kenney announced a way to help families with high utility bills.

“On top of ending the fuel tax, we’ll also provide relief to families and small businesses struggling with the higher cost of electricity. Alberta families have consumed less than 250 megawatt-hours of electricity and that's almost all households. They'll receive a $150 rebate on their electricity bills for this past winter."

Kenney says they will take action as soon as possible to introduce legislation and get this done. It may take a bit of time for Albertans to actually receive the rebate, however, as the province has to work with over 45 energy providers in the province.

Dale Nally, Associate Minister of Natural Gas and Electricity, is excited to see these rebates come into place.

“Today's announcement will offer short term relief on the electricity portion of the bills.” says Naly, “Later this year, nearly 2 million families farms and businesses in the province will receive three $50 monthly electricity rebates which will retroactively target January, February, and March 2022 bills.”

The rebate will be applied right to people's bills, no paperwork or application forms will be necessary. If you pay an electricity bill, you will see this rebate on it. Most households, farms, and small businesses are expected to be eligible.

“Our government will table new legislation this spring to quickly enable the program. This rebate will combine with the natural gas price protection program announced in Budget 2022 to provide real relief and certainty for millions of Alberta ratepayers on all sides of the utility bills.”

Nally finished off by saying, “We are standing up for consumers and making sure that life in Alberta remains affordable with this timely rebate.”
