At approximately 2:25 p.m. Monday afternoon, the Sexsmith Fire Department along with the Clairmont Station of the County of Grande Prairie Regional Fire Service responded to a reported chimney fire in Sexsmith near 101A Avenue and 99 Street.

Upon arrival, crews found smoke in the residence. The Sexsmith Fire Department quickly extinguished the fire and contained it to the chimney / pellet stove.

“Every time you have a fire in a wood burning fire place or pellet stove, it leaves traces of soot and tar, causing creosote to form.” said District Chief Dale Widsten of the Sexsmith Fire Department. “Wood burning fire places, pellet stoves, and their chimneys should be cleaned annually by a certified chimney sweep”.

No one was injured as a result of the fire.

The County Regional Fire Service’s Fire Marshall has completed his investigation.
