On November 12, 2019, Hinton RCMP received several complaints from members of the public of suspected fraudulent phone scam attempts. In these phone calls, an individual speaking very poor English identified himself as Constable Marshall and told the callers that twenty five banks accounts had been opened in the name of a Chantel Cote. The caller further stated he needed to confirm the last three digits of the recipient's Social Insurance Number. The caller than warned if the recipient did not comply a warrant would be issued for their arrest.

These phone calls were being displayed as coming from the "Hinton RCMP" and had the detachment complaint line of 780-865-5544 coming up with these calls. Hinton RCMP would like to remind the public that the RCMP will never attempt to obtain your Social Insurance Number over the phone nor would a warrant be issued for your arrest if you did not comply with this request. This is another example of a fraudulent phone scam that unfortunately is becoming increasingly common.
