Grande Prairie RCMP have charged a 34-year-old male following an assault with a weapon.

On Dec. 23, 2021, at 12:00 p.m. Grande Prairie RCMP responded to an assault with a weapon complaint in the area of 117 Avenue and 100 Street Grande Prairie. Officers responded and located an adult female who had been assaulted with a knife. The female was transported by EMS to hospital with serious non life threatening injuries. The suspect and victim were known to one another. The suspect fled the area prior to police arrival.

Later at 1:00 p.m. Grande Prairie RCMP received a complaint of a carjacking that occurred in the area of Hillcrest Drive and 96 Street involving the same suspect. The adult male owner of the vehicle sustained minor physical injuries. The suspect used the stolen vehicle to attend a residence where he assaulted an adult male with a knife.  The suspect and the adult male who was assaulted were known to one another. The male was transported to hospital with non life threatening injuries.

Police located the suspect driving the stolen vehicle and maintained surveillance of the suspect until he was arrested without incident with assistance from Grande Prairie General Investigation Section, Grande Prairie Special Investigations Unit, Grande Prairie Police Dog Services, Grande Prairie Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) Combined Enforcement Special Enforcement Unit, and Grande Prairie Detachment officers.

Brian Russell (34), of Grande Prairie is facing charges of:

·Aggravated assault

·Uttering threats (x2)

·Robbery with a weapon (x2)

·Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose

·Fail to comply with release order (x6)

·Unlawfully in a dwelling house

·Possession of a controlled substance

Following a judicial hearing Russell has been remanded in custody to appear in Grande Prairie Provincial court on Jan. 5, 2022.

As this matter is now before the courts no further information can be provided.
