On Saturday, Feb. 24, 2024, at approximately 5:30 a.m., a 64-year-old male was on the ground level Churchill LRT platform waiting for a train when he was approached by a male suspect.

The two had a brief verbal exchange which resulted in the suspect attacking the 64-year-old, knocking him to the ground and violently assaulting him.

Five other suspects also reportedly joined the attack, robbing the man prior to fleeing the scene.

EMS attended and transported the man to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

28-year-old Brady Rodney Desroches-Smith of Grande Prairie is one of the individuals charged with aggravated assault and robbery. At the time of his arrest, they learned he was also wanted for first-degree murder by the Grande Prairie RCMP. 

Desroches-Smith has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Brian Buchaski. 34-year-old Buchaski was found in a wooded area of Grande Prairie back in December 2023.
