Alberta has added 543 new cases of COVID-19 today (Jan. 29), from about 11,600 tests completed, for a positivity rate of about 4.5%.

Right now, 7,805 cases are active in the province. With 765 more people recovering, the recovered total has reached 113,939.

There’s 594 people in the hospital with the virus, with 110 of these in intensive care. This is three more hospitalizations than reported yesterday, and two fewer ICU admissions. In the North Zone, there’s 70 people in the hospital with nine of these admitted to intensive care.

Alberta has reported 14 more COVID-related deaths, for a total of 1,620 since the start of the pandemic. One of these deaths was in the North Zone, a man in his 90s in the MD of Greenview. Greenview has had two deaths and has 26 active cases and 256 recoveries.

As of January 28, Alberta has detected:

  • 31 cases of the variant first identified in the United Kingdom (B.1.1.7)
  • Six cases of the variant first identified in South Africa (B.1.351)

Twelve of these variants were detected since the last update. Of the 37 cases, all but three are linked to travel which are in the same household. One of these is the case mentioned on Monday, Jan. 25.

There have now been 104,327 vaccine doses administered.

In the City of Grande Prairie, seven new cases were added, and 12 people recovered. The active total is 147 with 984 recoveries.

In the County of Grande Prairie, no new cases were added today, and six people recovered. There’s now 39 active cases and 298 recoveries.
