Thursday is International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Awareness Day.

A day dedicated to raising awareness and offering support around the dangers of drinking during pregnancy and recognizing the plight of individuals and families who live with FASD. It is observed in communities around the world and is held on the ninth day of the ninth month to mark the nine months of pregnancy that begins with a healthy lifestyle.

To observe International FASD Day in Grande Prairie, the Northwest Peace FASD Network in partnership with other agencies from our area, will be encouraging people to go for a walk on one of three predetermined routes in Muskoseepi Park or from their home from 10 am to 3 pm.

This is a free community event, which will feature placards with FASD information along the routes. An information table will be setup at the Muskoseepi pavilion with FASD resources.

“This is a healthy way to honour the role of the mother and to remember to abstain from alcohol during the entire term of pregnancy”, states the NW FASD Executive Director, Gwen Vekved.

Check out the event on their FACEBOOK page.

Agencies partnering to put on this event this year are Grande Prairie Family Education Society, Canadian Mental Health and Northwest Peace FASD Network.
