The County of Grande Prairie, Town of Sexsmith and Town of Wembley have received joint designation under the Rural Renewal Stream program to support local businesses in filling labour gaps by attracting and retaining Canadian newcomers for vacant positions.

This program is linked to the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) where newcomers who accept full-time positions from eligible businesses will receive nomination for permanent residency, giving them the opportunity to remain in Canada working, living, and contributing to local communities.

“Council is very pleased to endorse this innovative program,” said Reeve Leanne Beaupre.  “Identifying and leading opportunities for partnerships that support economic growth is one of Council’s strategic priorities and this program will enhance local businesses’ efforts to fill vacancies in the service industry, as well as technical and professional positions.”

The three municipalities are working together to jointly implement the program.

"The Town of Sexsmith is delighted to be a partner in this opportunity. Attracting newcomers as a region not only fills the existing labour gap, but also strengthens our regional partnerships and successes," said Sexsmith Mayor Kate Potter.

“The Town of Wembley is excited to be included in the Rural Renewal Stream Designation program,” said Mayor Kelly Peterson.  “Our Town is looking forward to seeing newcomers become a part of our community where they can live and work. The goal is to grow our community and encourage economic growth for the town as well. This program is in line with one of our strategic priorities, which is economic and business growth.

The program benefits local businesses in expanding the pool of potential workers, as well as supporting retention by accelerating the process for full-time employees to gain permanent residency status. It is specifically designed for communities with populations less than 100,000, that have been endorsed by council, and have employers who are interested in participating.

Businesses who are interested in participating must offer full-time positions with a duration of at least one-year and offer wages and benefits that meet or exceed the industry standard.  Employees wishing to apply for permanent residency through AAIP must have accepted a full-time position from a participating business, be living in the designated community, and have an endorsement from the local Economic Development Officer.
