The County of Grande Prairie today announced Mark Schonken as the municipality’s first Director of Financial Services.  

Schonken will assume the role on Jan. 18, 2021 – a new position created from an organizational restructuring that will come into effect in the new year to support the continuing growth across the County.  

In his new role, Schonken will oversee the Assessment, Asset Management, Finance, Procurement Services, and Risk Management departments, and help drive the County’s strategic direction through the Financial Services Division.  

Schonken brings over 23 years of municipal and private financial management experience, serving most recently as Chief Financial Officer for the MD of Opportunity No. 17. His municipal experience also includes Director of Corporate Services for Big Lakes County, Director of Finance for Mackenzie County.  

He holds Chartered Accountant designations in both Canada and South Africa; an Honours Certificate in Accounting Science from the University of South Africa; and a Bachelor of Accounting Science and a Bachelor of Science in Botany and Entomology from the University of the Free State.  

“Mark is a proven leader, and he brings a tremendous amount of experience in senior management and finances to this newly created role,” said Joulia Whittleton, CAO. “He has the vision and the background to lead the County into the future.”
