The City of Grande Prairie’s annual Road Rehabilitation Program starts off for the season on today (May 15), followed by the Trail Rehabilitation Program on May 20.

In 2020, the City of Grande Prairie is investing $16.9 million in major road improvements. A list of road improvement projects is available online. $400,000 is being invested to install and replace trails in the City.

Road Rehabilitation

As a continuation of last year’s construction, Wapiti Gravel Suppliers is returning to the College Park area starting today.

106 Street between 100 Avenue and 104 Avenue, and 104 Avenue between 106 Street and 105 Street will see road work including cold milling, asphalt overlay, storm sewer infrastructure repairs, concrete work, line painting and landscaping.

Sidewalk access will be maintained during construction, however pedestrians should expect some disruptions. Transit stop 406/606 will be temporary taken down and rerouted to stop 408/608. All traffic detours will be clearly marked.

Crews are anticipated to be operating from Monday to Saturday with work expected to be complete by mid-June.

Monday, May 25, Wapiti Gravel Suppliers are scheduled to begin asphalt overlay and Full Depth Reclamation (FDR) work on 116 Avenue between the east side of the CN Rail tracks and 92 Street; and FDR work on:

  • Westpointe Drive between 81 Avenue and 74 Avenue
  • Patterson Drive between Prairie Road and 84 Avenue

Construction at all three sites is anticipated to be complete by the end of June.

Trail Rehabilitation

Starting May 20, Knelsen Sand & Gravel Ltd. begins removing and replacing the asphalt trail along 100 Avenue between 106 Street and 108 Street next week. Then, in early June, they move to the trail that runs along the north side of Crystal Lake to perform repairs.

As part of the Trail Rehabilitation Program, the City of Grande Prairie is repairing critical sites to ensure that trails are safe for all users and to improve drainage along the pathways. The specified trails will be closed to the public until all work is completed. All construction zones will be properly signed and barricaded.

Pedestrian pathways and trails are essential for promoting a healthy city and increasing connectivity between neighbourhoods. The Trail Rehabilitation Program presents an opportunity to make functional improvements to the city’s existing trail system.

The City reminds the public to remain cautious of workers who may be present in the construction area. Please obey all signage and proceed with caution.
