The 2020 Alberta Pond Hockey Championships will be taking place near Grimshaw this weeked, March 6-8.

"Hockey was born and raised on the frozen ponds, lakes, dugouts and rivers of Canada. Outdoors in the crisp winter air, no red or blue lines, no face-off circles, in the open and just for fun. The Alberta Pond Hockey Championships will tip its hat to the days when hockey was played the way nature intended it.

"Lac Cardinal Provincial Park, located between Peace River and Grimshaw, provides a picturesque setting. Besides offering some “good old hockey games” the tournament will also offer a range of events for the whole family to enjoy. A feeling of nostalgia is sure to be in the air and on the ice. Join us as we step back in time to when hockey was played on ice that may have been slushy or cracked, but where the fun of the game was all that mattered.

"Pond Hockey is an awesomely enjoyable game comprised of a team of four players competing against another team of four players with no goaltenders. The game is played on an natural outdoor ice surface that is approximately 150 feet by 75 feet or 75 per cent of a regulation ice surface. A game is 30 minutes in length with two 15 minute halves. The rules are pretty simple and it’s all-round fun for everyone; players and spectators!"

Environment Canada is predicting a sunny weekend, with an average temperature of -10.
