Drivers, parents, and school goers are reminded that 30 km/h school zones start on August 30, 2021 and are in effect from Monday to Friday between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Parents and guardians dropping children off at school can prepare for the first day by pre-planning the trip, scheduling extra time for drop-off, and familiarizing themselves with the school site and parking or drop-off zones.

Drivers and pedestrians are reminded to be patient and vigilant when travelling near schools. The City of Grande Prairie Enforcement Services recommend drivers;

o   Yield to pedestrians who have indicated an intention to cross the road.

o   Obey parking restrictions around schools and never stop on or within 5-metres of a marked crosswalk or a bus stop.

o   Allow extra time to find a safe parking space.

·       Pedestrians

o   Cross at marked crosswalks and use the “point, pause, proceed” method.

o   Wear light or bright coloured clothing.

o   Never assume that drivers can see you, even if you can see them.

o   Avoid using cell phones when crossing the road.

Bike Safety

City of Grande Prairie Enforcement Services also reminds those biking to school to stay alert.

Wearing a helmet is the best defense against traumatic head injury in the case of a fall or accident. Helmets must be worn by those under 18 years old, under the Vehicle Equipment Regulations. It is a $97.00 fine if not wearing a helmet.

Brakes are always required on bikes and lights are required if cycling at night. Cyclers should test both to assure they are in working order. In addition, cyclists:

  • Should yield to pedestrians
  • Obey all traffic controls, such as stop signs and traffic lights
  • Walk their bike when using a crosswalk

The City of Grande Prairie wishes everyone a great and safe return to school.
