Dr. Deena Hinshaw's Tuesday, April 13th COVID-19 update opened with some news about the seasonal flu.

The flu season has come to an end with no cases reported across the province, despite 122,000 respiratory swabs having been tested specifically for the flu, compared to fewer than 47,000 for the previous year.

Hinshaw pointed to a few factors that contributed to the anomaly, including the highest uptick in vaccinations in over 10 years with over 1.6 million doses administered, as well as the extensive public COVID measures.

According to Hinshaw, the same trend can be seen in numerous countries across the world, which also saw record-low flu numbers.

She says it goes to show how effective sanitization and distancing measures can be.

Dr. Hinshaw says this "a reminder of the power of our collective actions.”

“Together, we were successful in keeping influenza out of our hospitals, workplaces, schools and communities, and that is an incredible triumph. I want to thank Albertans for getting immunized and for protecting each other from influenza, COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses.

“This success reminds us that we can beat COVID-19 as well, if we work together.”
