The May long weekend is just days away and with the loosing of some restrictions across the province, some Albertans are wondering what they can and can't do.

Campgrounds across the province are usually bustling with activity over the May long weekend, but that won't be the case this year.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw says that you can do some camping over the weekend, just not at provincial parks. Private and municipal campgrounds, however, have been given the okay to open at this time with strict physical distancing requirements in place.

Hinshaw says "Private and municipal campgrounds will be able to operate in stage one of relaunch as early as May 14 as long as they follow appropriate guidance. This is intended to limit risk for employees and campers. For campers wishing to enjoy the outdoors this May long weekend, please remember that physical distancing and restrictions on groups of 15 or more still apply."

While online reservations are being accepted at provincial campgrounds starting on Thursday (May 14), they won't be open for business until June 1.

Dr. Hinshaw also addressed the desire for Albertans to head to their cottages and summer homes. She says that if it is located within the province that is okay as long as you aren't posing a direct risk to yourself or the community you are visiting. Hinshaw says "I have heard from many Albertans hoping to travel to summer homes, cabins and cottages within Alberta. Responsible travel to these locations within the province is permissible with consideration to community guidelines."

Dr. Hinshaw strongly discourages any recreational travel outside of the province and says that "Travel to summer homes outside the province is still not recommended."
