A recent contestant on American Idol who calls himself a '100 per cent gospel singer' moved judge Lionel Ritchie to tears recently when he performed a song by Tasha Cobbs.

Dontrell Briggs performed a Tasha Cobbs song 'For Your Glory.' The song was a tribute to his godmother, who died months before the taping.

"If I get that golden ticket, she is going to be rejoicing with the angels," says Briggs to the judges.

His soulful rendition brought Ritchie to saying yes to Hollywood for the contestant.

"Some people can come in and just sing, and then some people come in and just let God come through them," says Richie.

The other judges including Katy Perry and Luke Bryan weren't sure Briggs could cut it on the American Idol stage.

The judges offered Briggs one more opportunity to share a different song. He started singing country artist Chris Stapelton's 'Tennessee Whiskey' and didn't get far before Bryan shouted, "You're going to Hollywood."
