In today's COVID-19 update, Dr. Hinshaw announced 8142 recoveries from the virus and 807 active cases.

Out of more than 8200 tests in the last 24 hours, 120 cases were identified. This is the first time since May 2 we have had more than 100 daily cases reported.

No new cases have been reported in the City or County of Grande Prairie. Clear Hills County had one recovery. They have six active and ten recovered. Mackenzie County has three new cases for 23 active and 45 recoveries.

Currently, 69 people are in the hospital, with eight of these in intensive care.

Two more deaths were identified for a total of 165. Three more regions have been added to the Province’s watch list.

Alberta is implementing some changes soon in long-term care facilities. While restricting visits was necessary to protect our seniors and most vulnerable, it has also taken a toll on residents. Dr. Hinshaw says that there are no risk-free options and the over-all health and well-being need to be taken into consideration.

Starting July 23, the Province is switching to a safe access approach. The restrictive approach allowed only one designated visitor indoors, only when necessary and only two outside, with one of these needing to be the designated visitor. Consultation with families, residents and staff showed that this caused depression and stress in residents. Consultation also showed the spread of COVID-19 is still a concern.

In the safe access approach, each location will develop its own measures, and facility restrictions will vary. Each resident will be able to designate two support people who can visit indoors as much as residents want, four people can visit outside, and they don’t have to be designated, and some indoor visits may be possible.

Some other changes include expanding the definition of when a patient may be at the end of their life, requiring facilities to establish an appeal process for visitation decisions, and more flexibility for lower risk people. Screening of visitors and restrictions on staff working in more than one location will remain.

Dr. Hinshaw reminds Albertans that more access means more responsibility to keep people safe. No one should visit if they feel even a little sick, and make sure to follow protocols. Visitors need to check with their local facility on their plan for visitors.
