The latest report from Statistics Canada, released today July 10, shows that employment is on the rebound in Canada. 

June’s Labour Force Survey shows that employment in the country is up 43% from April. From February to April, 5.5 million Canadian workers were affected by the COVID-19 economic shutdown. By the week of June 14 to June 20, the number of workers affected was 3.1 million.  

Employment has risen by nearly 1 million since May. May’s unemployment rate was at a record high at 13.7% and dropped in June to 12.3%. 

Employment has increased in Alberta for the second month in a row, however, the unemployment rate remains steady at 15.5%. This is considerably higher than last year's June rate of 6.6%. 

Grande Prairie’s region, which is western Alberta, has the highest rate in the province, at 16.5%. This is up 2.5% from last month’s rate of 14.1%. Edmonton is the next highest at 15.8%, while the lowest is Lethbridge and Medicine Hat at 9.8%.
