The Federal Government will be purchasing new personal protective equipment (PPE).

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also announced the government will be buying 500 Canadian-made new ventilators, and through agreements with Canadian manufacturers, is trying to find a ‘made in Canada’ solution.

“The entire world is trying to get their hands on the various equipment needed to fight this virus. That is why we know that it will be important to have made in Canada solutions,” he said.

“I am incredibly, incredibly proud of Canadian companies, Canadian suppliers and manufactures who are stepping up and saying we want to help, we will help make ventilators, we will help make masks and gowns, and all of the things that we are going to need in the coming weeks,” said Trudeau.

Today the government announced that they are ordering millions of masks and thousands of ventilators.

They have deals with three Canadian companies, Thornhill Medical, Medicom and Spartan Bioscience in order to make equipment like ventilators, surgical masks, and test kits.

Over 60 million N95 masks are expected to arrive this week. Those are a type of mask that filters out particles.

The government has also ordered 1,570 ventilators and over one million test kits.

The Federal Government is trying to get 4,000 ventilators, but Thornhill Medical has announced it is also trying to make 500 mobile compact ventilators.

There are 7,708 cases right now as of March 31 in Canada of COViD19

“We continue to work very very closely with the provinces to know exactly what the needs are, what the supplies are, where potential gaps might be appearing depending on trend lines and different modeling,” Trudeau said. “We are in constant communication to ensure that the resources needed in different parts of the country will get there exactly when they are needed.”
