Earlier this week, the Government of B.C. issued a State of Emergency as hundreds of wildfires continue to burn throughout the province.

For many, the fires may have them rethinking plans to visit there this summer.

Despite the emergency declaration, the province is still open for travellers but you're being encouraged to "Know Before You Go."

That's the name of the current campaign from Destination British Columbia as they're providing resources and tools to make sure visitors and residents have the information they need when travelling.

"We want to ensure that travellers and residents alike in the province as they move around, have that information at their fingertips and they are completely informed," said spokesperson Maria Greene.

Some of the resources available include regular updates on the wildfires, routes to take, as well as emergency management information.

Greene also recommends checking in with visitor centres in B.C. if you have to change plans.

As you plan, you should also take into account which roads are open and prepare for sudden closures.

"Travelling through the province is possible but at any given time there are times where roads need to be closed for a period of time and re-routed. Right now, we are open to all of our visitors from Alberta."

According to Drive B.C., some sections of Highway 1 are closed due to the wildfires along with other major provincial highways and local roads.

The B.C. Forests Ministry says 277 active wildfires are burning in the province.
