Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw will be hosting a telephone town hall along with Dr. Eliana Castillo, Clinical Associate Professor at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary. It will take place on, Wednesday, October 27 from 6:15 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. The session is meant to answer questions from expectant parents, new parents, and those planning to become pregnant with regards to the COVID vaccines.

Dr. Hinshaw says, "There continues to be a lot of misinformation about vaccines on social media that we are working hard to address. In particular, we have heard questions about whether the vaccines impact fertility or are safe for pregnant women."

There currently is no evidence to suggest that the COVID vaccines impact fertility in either women or men. As well, The Society of Obstetricians, Gynecologists of Canada, and the National Advisory Committee on Immunization have stated that the COVID-19 vaccines are safe for individuals who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Physicians continue to insist that the benefit of being vaccinated against the virus far outweighs the serious risks of severe outcomes of being unvaccinated and contracting the virus.

The current 4th wave of the COVID-19 pandemic saw a rise in the number of pregnant Albertans in the ICU.  There have been more pregnant people admitted to ICU in the past three months than during the entire first year of the pandemic.

Again, vaccines are recommended for anyone who is pregnant, or nursing and the town hall is an opportunity for Albertans to ask questions on the subject directly to Dr. Hinshaw and Dr. Castillo. The information session will be very helpful to anyone who is planning a pregnancy, currently expecting a baby or has recently had a baby.

You can participate in the town hall on Wednesday, October 27 by pre-registering by noon on the 27th. Once you are registered, you will be contacted to join the event.
