The NDP government has approved funding for much needed lodge and supportive living spaces in the central Peace.

The provincial government has approved up to $24 million for 52 supportive living and 40 new and renovated lodge spaces in Spirit River.

“The seniors built this community and deserve to retire and age in their community,” said Marg McCuaig-Boyd, MLA for Dunvegan-Central Peace-Notley, during the announcement.

A needs assessment by the G5 group, the five municipalities in the region, concluded more lodge spaces and supportive living spaces were required in the region. Presently Pleasantview Lodge, a 40-unit 60-year old facility in Spirit River is the main facility in the region.

Grande Spirit Foundation, the local housing authority deemed the building of this supportive living project to be its highest priority.

Money for the project with come from both Alberta Health and Alberta Seniors’ and Housing.

The five municipalities include: Saddle Hills County, the Village of Rycroft, the Town of Spirit River, Birch Hills County and the MD of Spirit River. All five municipalities have been part of the Grande Spirit Foundation since it was established in 1959.
