Alberta Fish and Wildlife (AFW) have been really focusing on the next steps for their program. As part of the United Conservative Party (UCP) platform, the reduction of red tape in procedures across the board were being examined, and then improved on. For AFW the keys to their new plan is to listen to the anglers, and fishing enthusiasts at open houses that were scheduled last year. With all of the data they have put together a plan on what to fish, and where to stock certain fish breeds.

Some of the new stock are walleye, northern pike and yellow perch from water bodies with sustainable populations.

Jason Nixon, Minister of Environment and Parks reminded Albertans, " I’m very pleased that we were able to identify and offer additional angling and conservation opportunities in most areas of the province for the 2020 season. Remember, when you’re out on the water to ensure you’re practicing social distancing and following all public health advice. ”

The recovery of healthy fish habitat will restore the number of cutthroat trout, bull trout and Athabasca rainbow trout.

About 300,000 anglers fish Alberta’s lakes and rivers every year, with sport fishing contributing more than $600 million annually to Alberta’s economy.

The 2020 Alberta Sportfishing Regulations come into effect on April 1and Albertans can purchase their 2020 Alberta sport fishing licence online at AlbertaRELM.com to help with social distancing.
