March is Fraud Prevention Month and Alberta RCMP is supporting the Alberta Community Crime Prevention Association’s campaign by sharing tips and resources.

As of January 31, 2023, nationwide there have been 6,610 reports of fraud, 3,923 victims of fraud, and $43.6 million lost to fraud.

Alberta RCMP would like to shine the spotlight on identity theft.

Cpl. Sean Milne, Alberta RCMP Provincial Economic Crime Team says, “Identity fraud is one of the most common forms of fraud in Canada. Criminals will often steal a person’s identity to commit other crimes such as fraudulently applying for loans or credit cards, opening bank accounts, transferring bank funds, and more.”

To protect yourself from identity theft and fraud, it is important to practice the following:

  • Always shred personal and financial documents before disposal.

  • Check your postal mail regularly.

  • Monitor your various accounts regularly for any unusual activity.

  • If you do experience any strange experiences, raise awareness by sharing the incident with friends and family.

If you believe you have been a victim of fraud, report it to the local police detachment and to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre by calling 1-888-495-8501.

Ensure you contact your bank and credit card company if your personal or financial information has been compromised.
